What is the legend of the Split Cliff lovers?

Long ago, a young scholar passed through La Sombra while charting the Ennai Basin. He was quiet, well-mannered, and clearly not one of the rough-edged frontier folk. Still, he caught the heart of a local girl, and she caught his. Their affection was unmistakable—and unwelcome. When her neighbors saw that the bond was more than passing, they set fire to the scholar’s small camp and drove him out of town.

But the girl chose to go with him.

When the townsfolk realized she’d vanished, they rushed to find her. They tracked the couple to the mountain trail, following their path up toward a narrow cave set deep in the ridge.

As the townspeople approached, the lovers disappeared inside.

Before they could be caught, the cave sealed shut behind them.

Split clean down the middle, the cliff face revealed no sign of the passage they had just entered. The crowd stood stunned, calling out the girl’s name again and again.

But from somewhere behind the stone, they heard only the lovers calling out to each other—finding their way through the dark, reunited by the sound of each other’s voice.
